The Volcano attracts geologist and biologist all around the world because of its biodiversity and also because, since recently, was the most active volcano in Costa Rica. The volcano has not had any lava eruption since December 2010 but is considered active. It is protected together with Cerro Chato and part of the Arenal Volcano National Park with an area of 12016 ha.
The Arenal volcano National Park belongs to the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area, which comprises two major attractions for local and international tourism, La Fortuna, a little town in the base of the Arenal volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest, two of the most visited areas. Both together with other important areas lies within 2040 square kilometers that protects eight of the 12 life zones and 16 protected ranges. The protected area includes Lake Arenal, and artificial lake, the largest in Costa Rica which generates 20 % of the country’s electricity.
Beside the majestic Arenal volcano, there are other attractions in the Fortuna neighborhood that includes, the Fortuna Waterfall, The hanging Bridges, the Arenal Lake, Celeste River, Venado Caves, and many options of hot springs resorts.
